A Prospective Pediatric Longitudinal Evaluation Study (APPLES)

A Prospective Pediatric Longitudinal Evaluation Study (APPLES)Astellas Pharma US, Inc. invites physicians and their patients to participate in APPLES, a long-term observational study designed to evaluate the safety of Protopic (Tacrolimus) ointment in children with atopic dermatitis. As part of our commitment to expand knowledge about Protopic safety, APPLES is collecting health information for 10 years on children who have previously been treated with Protopic. The APPLES trial is an observational study and does not provide or require current administration of Protopic or any other therapy.

Participating in a 10-year study may seem challenging. To help physicians, the Astellas APPLES Study Team can facilitate the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process and prompt patients to visit for follow-up. Physicians will be appropriately compensated for enrolling patients, as well as for performing and reporting on patient physicals and dermatologic exams. Physicians will typically receive $500 for enrolling an evaluable patient in APPLES, $200 for each annual physical exam and $250 for each biennial dermatologic exam.

Patients who first used Protopic for at least 6 weeks before 16 years of age are encouraged to participate in APPLES if they have been diagnosed with atopic dermatitis and were treated with Protopic. Because Protopic has been available in the United States since 2001, both young adults and children may be eligible to participate. Once enrolled, patients (or their caregivers) will be interviewed every 6 months about their health by the Astellas APPLES Study Call Center. Patients (or caregivers) will also be reminded to return to their physician for a study-related free annual physical and free biennial dermatologic exam. Gift cards of a nominal value will be sent to patients (or caregivers) after each interview is completed.

All data collected will remain confidential in accordance with applicable privacy guidelines and regulations.

Approximately 4,000 patients have been enrolled in APPLES to date; however, many more are needed to meet our goal of 8,000 patients. If you are interested in enrolling patients in APPLES, or would like more information, please contact the Astellas APPLES Study Center Line at (877) 277-7530.

Pediatric Eczema Elective Registry (PEER)

Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and physicians can contribute to a "landmark" scientific, observational, research study by referring eligible patients to the Pediatric Eczema Elective Registry.

Children between 2-17 years of age who have used Elidel for the treatment of atopic dermatitis may be eligible to participate in a mail based observational long-term safety registry. No physical exams or labs are required. The child's eczema may be active or in remission at the time of enrollment. Further; the child does not have to be on medication at the time of enrollment. There are no medication requirements or medication restrictions during the entire observation period since this a "real world" observational study. The parent simply completes a questionnaire (survey) and Informed Consent/HIPAA at the time of enrollment and two brief surveys each year for 10 years. Surveys are completed from home by mail, email, phone or fax. More than one eligible child per family may participate in the Registry. Parents will receive educational materials, newsletters, and eczema skin care tips throughout the observation period. The parent will receive $25 within 6 weeks of each completed survey.

Enrollment forms are available through community-based referring physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants who will confirm patient eligibility on the child's Enrollment form via chart records. Referring physicians, Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants will receive an honoria of $50.00 per each eligible participant enrolled. The referring medical professional has no further involvement with the study.

Currently more than 2300 patients are participating in the Pediatric Eczema Elective Registry (PEER). Never before have so many children with eczema been followed for so long during their growing years in a "real-world" observational study. For further details about this opportunity, please contact (toll-free) 1-877-711-7337 (PEER) or their website. Enrollment forms will be sent upon request.
